USPS to Introduce Weekly Fuel Surcharges in 2027, Raising U.S. Parcel Shipping Cost Uncertainty

The United States Postal Service (USPS) plans to introduce a fuel surcharge for selected domestic package delivery services starting in January 2027. According to the reported policy, the surcharge will apply to USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, and Parcel Select. The move marks a shift toward a more fuel-responsive pricing structure as transportation expenses continue to influence the parcel delivery industry.

Under the planned mechanism, the fuel surcharge will be calculated as a percentage of the base postage price and adjusted weekly according to diesel and jet fuel price data published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Ground Advantage and Parcel Select will be linked to diesel prices, while Priority Mail services will use jet fuel benchmarks. USPS has indicated that surcharge rates and effective dates will be announced several days before implementation.
