The U.S. trucking market continues to face capacity constraints despite entering a period of elevated seasonal demand, according to a report by AMZ123. Recent data indicate that the Trucking Capacity Index fell by more than 4% in a four-week period to 9,518, its lowest level outside the holiday season since January. Meanwhile, the national truckload tender rejection rate remained relatively stable at approximately 13.9%, indicating that carriers continue to reject a significant share of contracted freight tenders amid tight capacity conditions.
The current rejection rate is notably higher than the level recorded during the same period last year, when it stood below 6%, while spot-market freight volumes have increased by approximately 2%. These indicators suggest that the balance between freight demand and available trucking capacity remains challenging. For shippers and logistics providers, tighter capacity can translate into less predictable truck availability, greater difficulty securing last-minute shipments and increased pressure on transportation planning.
Diesel prices have also added to the industry's operating challenges, rising 73% year over year, according to the report. Higher fuel costs can increase carriers' operating expenses and contribute to upward pressure on freight rates, particularly when combined with limited truck availability. At the same time, stricter enforcement of emissions standards and immigration policies has reportedly placed additional pressure on the driver workforce, while some carriers have withdrawn vehicles from service because of safety concerns.
Looking ahead, the U.S. trucking market may remain sensitive to changes in freight demand, fuel costs, regulatory enforcement and driver availability. Shippers are advised to secure transportation capacity early, maintain close communication with carriers and allow sufficient flexibility in delivery schedules. For importers, exporters and cross-border logistics providers, proactive planning and regular rate reviews will be important for managing transportation costs, reducing disruption risks and maintaining reliable domestic distribution.
