U.S. Restores 50% Tariffs on Canadian Goods, Triggering Consumer Pushback Against American Products

The United States has reinstated tariffs of up to 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods under Section 338, effective from August 22, adding new pressure to U.S.–Canada trade relations. The move covers a broad range of Canadian exports and comes as businesses on both sides of the border face renewed uncertainty over import costs, supply chains and cross-border trade conditions.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of ongoing trade negotiations with the United States and introduced retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on roughly 700 categories of U.S. products, valued at about C$20 billion, beginning September 8. Canada also unveiled a C$7 billion assistance package aimed at supporting domestic businesses and workers affected by the escalating tariff dispute.

The renewed trade tensions are also influencing Canadian consumer behavior. According to an Angus Reid Institute survey released on August 25, 52% of Canadians said they may or definitely will stop purchasing U.S.-made vehicles, while 60% intend to avoid American alcoholic beverages. The findings suggest that tariff disputes are increasingly affecting purchasing decisions beyond their direct impact on import and export costs.

Food and beverage purchases are showing a similar shift, with around 40% of Canadian food consumers and 39% of alcohol consumers reportedly checking product origins and choosing locally produced or non-U.S. alternatives. For companies involved in U.S.–Canada trade and cross-border logistics, the latest tariff changes highlight the need to closely monitor customs policies, landed costs, sourcing strategies and supply-chain adjustments as trade uncertainty continues.
