U.S. CBP Strengthens Importer Verification Rules, Accurate 5106 Information Becomes Key to Customs Compliance

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced enhanced verification requirements for importer information submitted through CBP Form 5106, with new enforcement measures scheduled to take effect on September 18, 2026. The policy aims to improve the accuracy and reliability of Importer of Record (IOR) data, ensuring that companies involved in U.S. imports provide complete and authentic business information. 

Under the updated requirements, importers must ensure that key details, including company name, physical address, phone number, email address, and identification information, are accurate and directly associated with the importer. CBP may immediately void IOR numbers if submitted information is found to be incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading, which could affect the ability to complete customs clearance and import goods into the United States.

The new compliance measures highlight the growing importance of transparency and data accuracy in global trade operations. Customs brokers and logistics providers assisting with importer registration must also conduct proper verification and ensure they have valid authorization from importers before submitting relevant information to CBP. 

For international businesses and cross-border logistics providers, the policy serves as a reminder to review importer records, strengthen customs compliance procedures, and maintain accurate documentation.
