Dockworkers at the ports of Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges and Zeebrugge are expected to launch coordinated industrial action on September 4, potentially disrupting cargo handling across three of Northern Europe’s most important maritime gateways. The action, announced by Dutch unions FNV Havens and CNV, is intended to protest government plans to reduce social security spending by €6.5 billion and extend working-life requirements by two years.

Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges and Zeebrugge serve as critical hubs for European container shipping, transshipment and inland distribution, meaning even a temporary stoppage could affect vessel schedules, terminal operations and cargo delivery timelines.
The disruption comes as congestion pressure is already building around Rotterdam. Monitoring data cited in the report showed that as of August 29, around 17 container vessels were waiting near the port, representing approximately 36,000 TEU of capacity. Rotterdam has also recently been included on industry congestion hotspot lists, increasing concerns that the strike could further extend vessel waiting times and container backlogs.
Importers, exporters and freight forwarders using Northern European routes should closely monitor carrier notices and terminal updates in the coming days.
