New $1.2 Billion Charleston Terminal to Suspend Container Operations Starting August 1
2026-07-02
The South Carolina Ports Authority has announced that the newly built Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal in Charleston will temporarily suspend container handling operations from August 1, 2026. The decision comes as part of operational adjustments following changes in regional cargo demand and terminal planning.
The terminal, completed in 2021 with an investment of approximately $1.2 billion, was designed to enhance Charleston’s container capacity and support future trade growth. However, current market conditions have led the port authority to temporarily pause container activities at the facility.
During the suspension period, container services previously handled by the terminal will be transferred to other Charleston port facilities, including the Wando Welch Terminal and North Charleston Terminal. The move aims to maintain service continuity and minimize disruption for customers.
Industry analysts believe the adjustment reflects the evolving nature of global shipping networks and port capacity management. Carriers and logistics providers are advised to monitor routing changes and prepare flexible transportation plans for future cargo arrangements.
