MSC Partially Restores Red Sea Services as Five Major Vessels Return via Suez Canal

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced a limited restoration of selected Red Sea and Suez Canal services after reassessing regional security conditions and operational risks. According to the latest shipping update, the company is gradually resuming transits on several east-west trade lanes. The first phase involves five mainline container vessels with a combined capacity of more than 90,000 TEU, signaling a cautious but meaningful step toward restoring traditional Asia-Europe routing.

The vessels are deployed across key services including the Asia-North Europe Albatros route, the India-Mediterranean Himalaya service and other long-haul east-west connections. Ships involved include MSC MICHEL CAPPELLINI, MSC JOSEFINA, MSC ANNA, MSC TINA and MSC BERYL, with capacities ranging from around 15,000 TEU to more than 20,000 TEU. Their return to Suez transit highlights MSC’s attempt to improve network efficiency while maintaining close risk control in the Red Sea region.

For global shippers, freight forwarders and importers, the gradual reopening of the Suez route could help reduce transit times compared with continued diversions around the Cape of Good Hope. Shorter voyages may also support better vessel utilization, lower fuel consumption and improved schedule reliability on China-Europe, Asia-Mediterranean and India-Europe trade lanes. However, the restoration remains partial, and future deployment decisions will continue to depend on regional security assessments and operating conditions.

MSC’s latest move adds to a broader industry trend in which major carriers are cautiously testing or restoring Red Sea services in stages.
