MSC Container Ship Reports Severe Corrosion Leakage at Antwerp Port, Multiple Berths Temporarily Suspended

A container vessel operated by MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) experienced a serious corrosion-related leakage incident at the Port of Antwerp on July 14. According to reports, the vessel “MSC MIA SUMMER” arrived at the port and a container carrying corrosive materials was found to have leaked, triggering an emergency response from port authorities and related organizations.

Following the discovery, emergency procedures were immediately activated, with specialized teams deployed to assess the situation and manage the hazardous materials. Several nearby operations were temporarily suspended, and personnel in the affected area were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Authorities also closed certain access routes around the affected zone to ensure safety.

The incident resulted in the temporary suspension of cargo handling activities at several berths, while relevant departments carried out inspections, cleanup operations, and risk assessments. According to preliminary information, a total of 155 individuals underwent medical examinations, including 28 people requiring further observation. One person was placed in an oxygen chamber, although no serious injuries have been reported so far.

Authorities stated that the leaked substance was a highly corrosive material with potential health risks if exposure occurred. Investigations into the cause of the leakage and the condition of the container are ongoing. Shipping companies and port operators are expected to strengthen hazardous cargo management procedures to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of global supply chain operations.
