Maersk has updated its vehicle booking requirements for containerized vehicle transportation, introducing stricter procedures for classifying and approving different types of vehicles. The revised policy covers passenger cars, motorcycles, electric bicycles, hybrid vehicles, and other vehicle categories. The changes aim to improve the accuracy of cargo classification, ensure compliance with applicable shipping regulations, and reduce potential risks associated with transporting vehicles with different power systems and structural characteristics.
According to the report, the updated requirements reflect changes to the international classification rules for vehicles, including amendments concerning hybrid vehicles and certain electric-powered transportation equipment. Under the relevant 42–24 series amendments, battery-powered vehicles have been assigned specific joint United Nations numbers to improve the accuracy of dangerous goods identification. As a result, shippers may need to provide more detailed product information and select the appropriate commodity code when submitting vehicle bookings.
The revised process also places greater emphasis on vehicle condition and structural integrity. Vehicles with unrepaired collision damage, or structural damage affecting the chassis, may be subject to restrictions when the selected commodity code does not accurately reflect their condition. For example, bookings under commodity code 004609 may require additional verification if the vehicle's electric system or structural condition presents potential transportation risks. Only vehicles meeting the applicable requirements, including relevant special provisions under UN 961, may qualify for booking under the specified conditions.
For vehicle exporters, freight forwarders, and international logistics providers, these changes highlight the importance of accurate cargo declarations and advance compliance checks. Before arranging containerized vehicle shipments, businesses should confirm the vehicle type, power system, battery classification, damage status, and applicable dangerous goods requirements. Although the report indicates that the mixed-vehicle exemption is scheduled to be removed in 2028, shippers should verify the effective date and specific booking conditions directly with Maersk before making transportation arrangements.
