Maersk Sends Two Mega-Ships Through Suez Canal as Red Sea Route Return Gains Momentum

On August 22, Maersk sent two large container vessels through the Suez Canal on the same day, marking another notable step toward the normalization of Asia-Europe shipping via the Red Sea. The vessels included the 19,000-TEU Mathilde Maersk and the approximately 17,200-TEU dual-fuel methanol vessel Bangkok Maersk, a newly built ship scheduled on the AE7 Asia-Europe service. The simultaneous transit attracted attention from the Suez Canal Authority and the global container shipping market.

The development suggests that major carriers are gradually moving beyond isolated trial sailings and beginning a more structured return to the traditional Red Sea-Suez Canal corridor. Over the past several weeks, selected services operated by the Gemini Cooperation have already resumed Suez transits, indicating that shipping lines are reassessing operational risks, transit times and network efficiency. A broader return would help shorten Asia-Europe shipping distances compared with rerouting vessels around the Cape of Good Hope.

For international shippers, freight forwarders and importers, a sustained reopening of the Suez route could gradually improve container schedule reliability and reduce voyage times between China, Europe and the Mediterranean. Shorter sailing distances may also reduce fuel consumption, vessel deployment pressure and some operating costs. However, carriers are expected to remain cautious, as security conditions in the Red Sea and surrounding waters will continue to influence route decisions and service adjustments.

The latest Maersk transits are therefore being viewed as an important signal for the global logistics industry rather than a complete return to pre-crisis operations.
