Hapag-Lloyd has announced an agreement to acquire a 25% stake in APM Terminals Maasvlakte II in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, marking another important step in strengthening its global terminal strategy. The investment will enhance long-term access to automated container handling capacity and further improve the reliability and efficiency of its international shipping network.
As a key European gateway, Maasvlakte II plays an important role in the Gemini Cooperation between Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk. Through the partnership, Hapag-Lloyd and APM Terminals will jointly support the terminal’s future development, capacity expansion, and operational improvements, while APM Terminals will continue maintaining operational control of the facility.
The Rotterdam terminal, which has been operating since 2015, is undergoing a major expansion project that includes additional deep-sea berth capacity, expanded yard space, new rail infrastructure, and advanced automated equipment. After completion, the terminal is expected to increase its annual handling capacity toward 5.4 million TEUs, further enhancing its position as a major European logistics hub.
For the global logistics and supply chain industry, this strategic investment reflects the growing importance of port infrastructure, automation, and integrated transportation networks. As shipping companies continue investing in key terminals worldwide, businesses may benefit from improved cargo efficiency, stronger supply chain resilience, and more reliable international trade connections.
