The container ship CONTSHIP JET sank in the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast on October 28, 2026, after being struck by three unmanned maritime drones. The Liberian-flagged vessel was sailing from Haifa, Israel, to Constanța, Romania, with 421 containers on board. All 18 crew members, including 14 Filipino and four Ukrainian seafarers, were safely evacuated and rescued by Bulgarian naval and border authorities. The incident has once again highlighted the growing security risks facing commercial shipping in the Black Sea.
Following the attack, more than 20 containers reportedly fell into the sea and were left drifting in the affected area. Bulgarian maritime authorities issued a navigational warning, noting that the lost cargo included flammable gases, non-flammable gases, flammable liquids and other dangerous goods. Reports also identified lithium-ion batteries, corrosive substances and other potentially hazardous materials among the ship’s cargo. The drifting containers and sunken vessel present additional risks to passing ships and maritime operations.
Environmental monitoring has become a key priority following the sinking. Bulgarian authorities launched inspections to assess potential marine pollution, with seawater sampling planned at five coastal locations. Initial inspections reported no visible signs of pollution, although further monitoring and laboratory analysis are necessary to determine whether the incident has affected the surrounding marine environment. Authorities continue to warn vessels operating in the area to maintain heightened caution.
The incident adds to mounting concerns over the safety and reliability of Black Sea shipping routes amid increasing maritime security threats. For shipping companies, freight forwarders and cargo owners, the event underscores the importance of monitoring regional security developments, reviewing transit risks and maintaining effective cargo documentation and contingency plans. Businesses shipping through the Black Sea should stay in close contact with carriers and logistics partners, as security restrictions or route adjustments may affect vessel schedules, transit times and overall supply chain planning.
