latest company news about China–U.S. Ocean Freight Rates Surge as Shippers Rush to Secure Space Ahead of Tariff Deadline

The latest Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) recorded a strong increase, reflecting growing pressure across major global shipping routes. According to recent market data, freight rates from Shanghai to the U.S. West Coast climbed to USD 4,149 per FEU, marking a 31.5% week-on-week increase and extending the market's upward trend for a fifth consecutive week.

The sharp rise is largely driven by exporters accelerating shipments ahead of the anticipated implementation of new U.S. tariff measures scheduled for late July. As a result, market focus has shifted from freight rate negotiations to the availability of vessel space, with carriers experiencing tightening capacity across key trans-Pacific routes.

European services also showed significant gains, with rates on major European routes increasing nearly 30%, while Mediterranean services continued to strengthen amid peak-season demand. Ongoing disruptions in the Red Sea region and longer voyage diversions have further reduced effective shipping capacity, contributing to sustained upward pressure on freight markets.

Industry analysts note that vessel space on U.S.-bound routes is expected to remain tight through June and potentially into the third quarter. Exporters, cross-border e-commerce sellers, and supply chain managers are therefore advised to secure bookings earlier than usual and closely monitor developments related to bunker adjustment factors (BAF), peak season surcharges (PSS), and other carrier-imposed fees.

Market participants generally expect freight rates to remain elevated in the near term as demand growth, geopolitical uncertainties, and capacity constraints continue to shape global container shipping dynamics.
