latest company news about China's Export Surge Fuels Trans-Pacific Shipping Boom as Freight Rates Approach USD 6,300

China's export sector recorded strong momentum in May, with customs data showing a 19.4% year-on-year increase in export value, marking the fastest growth in three months. The rebound in overseas demand has significantly boosted cargo volumes on China–U.S. trade lanes, driving a sharp increase in shipping activity across major coastal ports. Industry participants report that booking demand remains exceptionally strong as exporters accelerate shipments to key international markets.

Freight forwarders in Ningbo and other major export hubs indicate that capacity on U.S.-bound routes has become increasingly constrained. According to market feedback, ocean freight rates for a 40-foot container from Ningbo to the U.S. West Coast have risen from approximately USD 2,900 in April to nearly USD 6,300 in June. Air freight rates have also experienced substantial increases, climbing from around RMB 3,900 per ton to approximately RMB 7,500 per ton as demand continues to outpace available capacity.

The rapid escalation in transportation costs is placing growing pressure on exporters, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises with limited pricing flexibility. Many businesses are moving quickly to secure vessel space and negotiate long-term freight agreements to mitigate the impact of further rate increases. Logistics experts note that sustained capacity shortages could continue to support elevated freight levels throughout the peak shipping season.

Market analysts caution that while rising exports reflect resilient international demand, prolonged increases in freight costs may compress profit margins and create additional operational challenges for global supply chains. Companies engaged in international trade are being advised to strengthen logistics planning, diversify transportation options, and closely monitor market developments to reduce potential disruptions and maintain competitiveness in an increasingly volatile shipping environment.
